Cruising In Borneo
A New Cruising Destination
Though Borneo invokes images of pristine jungle and untouched islands, it is very rarely talked about as a potential cruising or yacht charter destination. Yet the warm and often crystal clear waters surrounding Borneo are home to coral atolls, oceanic islands, pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, and some of the best dive sites in the world. Even Borneo's interior is accessible for yachts by sailing up giant rivers that meander through dense tropical jungle where an abundance of nature & wildlife await. A private yacht charter holiday in Borneo could feature destinations such as Sarawak and Sabah (Malaysian Borneo), Brunei (Bruneian Borneo) or East Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo), and among renowned islands such as Sipadan, Layang-Layang, Sangalaki and the Derawan islands. These island explorations can be combined with a vast range of natural, cultural and historical adventures awaiting on mainland Borneo. Cruising up the rivers of Borneo with Raja Laut one can explore prehistoric jungle, and visit local tribes to discover their traditions.
The Malaysian state of Sabah is an ideal departure point for yacht charter expeditions, whether a sailboat or motorboat.Bounded by 3 seas: the South China Sea, the Sulu Sea, and the Celebes Sea, and known as the "Land Below the Wind", this lush corner of Borneo lies outside of the typhoon belt making it free from any major climatic disturbances.
Furthermore Sabah is now an established yachting destination thanks to the opening of several marinas including theSutera Harbour Marina in Kota Kinabalu.
The Vessels
With a relatively new yacht charter industry the majority of yachts available in Sabah are based in Kota Kinabalu, and will cruise to the secluded beaches of the Marine Park opposite Kota Kinabalu. Longer expeditions aboard crewed yachts can be arranged with advanced planning.
In Sarawak luxury journeys are possible with the Pandaw Rajang River Cruise. On the Sarawak River, operating out of Kuching, are sunset cruises and special events which pass by the major highlights of Kuching city and waterfront.
For a very special private charter the classic yacht Raja Laut offers to take you on the Trail of the White Rajah. Following in the Brooke's footsteps you will embark in Singapore, exploring tropical islands enroute, and arriving in Borneo by sail, just as they did in past centuries. The adventure continues in Kuching, where you will explore the vestiges of the Brooke era, experience Borneo's wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, colourful local markets, and the Orang Utan sanctuary.
